The 4 Essential Pillars of Umrah
Direct Answer: Umrah consists of four core steps: (1) Ihram (entering the state of purity and making the intention/Niyyah at or before Meeqat), (2) Tawaf (circumambulating the Kaaba 7 times in anti-clockwise direction starting from Hajr al-Aswad), (3) Sa'i (walking 7 rounds between the hills of Safa and Marwah), and (4) Halq or Taqsir (shaving or trimming the hair to exit Ihram).
Step 1: Ihram & Intention (Niyyah)
Before crossing the designated boundary (Meeqat) — or before boarding your flight from Pakistan if traveling directly to Jeddah — perform Ghusl, put on two white unstitched sheets (for men) or modest clothing (for women), pray 2 Rakats, and make the Niyyah for Umrah:
"Labbayk Allahumma Umrah" (Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah)
Recite the Talbiyah frequently until you reach Masjid al-Haram.
Step 2: Tawaf al-Umrah (7 Circuits)
Enter Masjid al-Haram with your right foot reciting the entrance supplication. Proceed to the corner of the Black Stone (Hajr al-Aswad). Face the Kaaba, raise your hands, and say "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar" (Istilam). Complete 7 anti-clockwise rounds around the Kaaba with modesty and devotion. After finishing, offer 2 Rakats behind Maqam Ibrahim and drink blessed Zamzam water.
Step 3: Sa'i between Safa and Marwah (7 Rounds)
Head to Mount Safa, face the Kaaba, and recite the prescribed Dua. Walk towards Mount Marwah. Walking from Safa to Marwah is round 1; returning to Safa is round 2. Complete a total of 7 rounds, ending at Mount Marwah.
Step 4: Halq or Taqsir (Exit from Ihram)
Men shave their head (Halq, highly rewarded) or cut their hair evenly (Taqsir). Women cut approximately one fingertip length (1 inch) from the ends of their hair. With this step, your Umrah is complete, Alhamdulillah!
